Dark Bites® is a horror short story collection focusing on the classic creatures we love to fear zombies, vampires, werewolves, ghosts and more. Crow needs to get out of the Windy City fast with just her wits and any weapons she can find. But between her and escape are hordes of brain-chomping zombies spreading their plague across the city and through her condo building. 52 floors to go...

Events in this book are further explored in my new horror ebook "Dead Woman's Curve" (ASIN B0061XDCV4).

Windy City of the Dead Dark Bites® Book 1 edition by Robert Ropars Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

After reading "848" (Dark Bites, Part 4) and being very impressed by the author's writing and storytelling skills, I was eager to read "Windy City of the Dead", and also because I'm a big fan of zombie- and post-apocalyptic books.

This short story isn't so much a post-apocalyptic novella, but is mainly centred on the zombie-theme, which of course, I enjoyed immensely. If you're looking for a story with depth and characters you can relate to, then give this one a miss. What I liked most about "848" was that I felt sorry for the main character, but in this story I felt absolutely nothing for the chain-smoking protagonist. I didn't like or dislike her, but at least she was fearless and I admired her courage.

Of course my favorite parts of the plot were the zombie-bashing, but the bit in the story that freaked me out the most, amongst others - and which had me glued to the pages - was the little undead girl terrorizing the main character who is trying to make her escape from the 52nd floor of her apartment building with the lights constantly going out.

If blood, guts, splattering brains, mechanical clown toys, and a katana-wielding woman don't give you the heeby jeebies, then go ahead and spend a worthwhile fifteen minutes of your time reading this suspenseful, gore-drenched novella. I especially recommend it for readers who are new to this genre.

Windy City of the Dead Dark Bites® Book 1 edition by Robert Ropars Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

It was a good story, and I thought it was well done. I wish it had been a little longer, or that it would be continued (which I think it might be, in another short story, but I'm not sure of that). It is worth a dollar. I like these kind of zombie reads.
Talking zombies is something different, but screaming "brains". C'mon!
Being from Chicago, I was hoping for more, but it was too dependable. Finding a bat and sword?
Needs more back information.
I enjoyed this short-ish zombie story. I liked the main character, the style and the story.. It definitely kept me reading on till my eyes literally fell shut, at night in bed. I got lucky and got this book, while it was a freebie on , most of what you can find, now free is crap, but don't let the cheap price deter you from reading this one, if you like truly goose bump rising, nail biting zombie stuff, this is a great read. I'm gonna read on from this author.
This is the third story I've read by the author 848 (Dark Bites) and Like Cats and Dogs (Dark Bites) are the other two). Ropars seems to have a clear respect for the history of horror, which should translate into a passion for the genre. None of that passion, however, makes it into the story.

A young woman, Crow Lee, is awoken from a bizarre dream by a sudden sound. At first she thinks the sound is an earthquake, then she thinks it is a plane crash. As she logs on to her social networking sites and turns on the news, the truth turns out to be something even more unsettling -- a meteor has struck downtown Chicago and it is having a strange effect on dead bodies. Crow finds herself having to fight her away out of her high rise apartment building with only the weapons she has on hand.

Ropars states that his intention was to place strong women in classic horror situations. The problem with this story is that the situation was a little too classic -- Crow is surrounded by stock 1960s-style zombies, right down to their muttered pleas for "brainsssss." I wish he had put a bit more of his creative energy into the scenes -- some innovation would have gone a long way.

Fans of strong female characters who don't mind a standard situation will still find a lot to enjoy in this story. It eliminates some of the problems with pacing and appropriate level of detail that I found in the other two stories in the series.
NOTE There is some swearing in the text. It is not a lot and seemed scene appropriate when I encountered it. I can imagine tossing out a few choice words in such situation. I did not take issue with such, but I am adding comment to review in case others would like to know.

This is story of gal on 52nd floor of condo building in Windy City. While settling in for evening she feels some rumbles and shakes and loud noises. Enter the plane crash into neighboring building (she thinks). While trying to tweet, facebook, text (etc.) in order to determine what is going on (she cannot quite see what is going on outside except fire glow and the like). Via news reports and some links sent to her by brother her view of what is really going on comes clear. There has been a crash (not a plane) that has managed to dispurse some gaseous cloud that reanimates some people who really are hungry. This tale (seems like will be more installments) is her getting from floor 52 down and out of building so she can get out of town before the whole city is taken over by the famished or is exterminated by government. Really pretty interesting future potential available.

The tale is told with description that allows some vivid images for reader. There is quite a bit of violence - though the encounters are plot driven. Rather than being dumped in to drive plot with a bunch of gratuitous gore for shock value. While is shocking - it is not overdone (to this reader).

The drawback for me was the editing. In one scene the gal looks out into hall and man is walking down hall holding hand of wife and young daughter. When she goes into hall, the characters are a man, his wife and teenage son Tom. There were over 20 other locations I marked that had punctuation or grammar errors. Work this short should really have fewer errors.

Still, even with the star lost for editing issues, I found the author to be a creative writer and worth recommending. I have already downloaded a longer work.
